More information

The original Knole sofa is an armchair made in the 17th century, probably around 1640. It is located in Knole in Kent, a house that has been owned by the Sackville-West family since 1605 but is now managed by the National Trust. It was originally not used as a comfortable sofa but as a formal throne-like seat where an aristocrat or monarch would have sat to receive visitors. It was wide enough for a monarch and consort to sit side by side.
