The second Norwegian Fram expedition (1898–1902) was led by Otto Sverdrup, who had previously served as captain during Fridtjof Nansen's first voyage. The purpose was to explore the areas west of Greenland. Fram was trapped in the ice for four long winters, but the crew successfully mapped 150,000 km² of unknown land (now part of Canada's Arctic islands).
