More about Laila Prytz

Laila Prytz studied under Otte Sköld in Stockholm, and later under Andre Lhote in Paris from 1933 to 1935. She undertook numerous study trips to, among other places, Italy, Germany, Spain, France, the USA, Africa and Asia.

Prytz is known for her purist painting with patterns, and later for her Concrete art characterised by pure colour fields and stylised forms, in which triangles and cubes are often a distinctive feature. She skilfully constructed her compositions using different, often vivid colours.

She made her debut with an exhibition at the legendary Gummesons konsthall in 1945. Following its success, numerous solo exhibitions in Sweden and abroad ensued. Throughout her life, Prytz received consistently positive reviews, including: “Melodic purism, with feeling and imagination, purity of line and simplified colour fields” and “an art halfway between Cubism and geometric abstraction, a Surrealism whose magic derives from true and free naivety” (Claude Bouyeure).
