Gåsö är belägen vid öppna havet omkring en halvmil sydväst om Lysekil och cirka sju hundra meter väster om Skaftön i Lysekils kommun. Gåsöskärgården består dels av två större öar, Gåsö och Storön och Kjällsö, dels av ett stort antal holmar och skär. Samhället Gåsö ligger i en vik på öns ostsida mot Skaftö. Det har troligen vuxit fram som ett fiskeläge. Under 1800-talet utvecklades Gåsö till en av Bohusläns ledande fraktfartsorter, något som syns på de så kallade kaptenshusen.
