Stefan Johanssons sparsmakade produktion kan i huvudsak delas in i fyra motivkretsar: interiörer- och stadslandskap i ljussken, porträtt och skogslandskap. Under sina tidiga år fick Johansson utbildning vid Konstfack, dock ansåg han sig själv vara autodidakt, något som kan sammankopplas med den teknik han tidigt utvecklade. Tekniken bestod av att han målade akvarell på duk och genomförde försök som innebar att späda ut färgen med olika typer av lösningsmedel vilket kom att skapa det typiska Johanssonska uttrycket där färgens lätthet låter dukens textur komma fram.
