Axel Olson växte upp i en enkel sjömansfamilj i Halmstad. 1915 bildade han gruppen Gnistan tillsammans med brodern Erik Olson och kusinen Waldemar Lorentzon. På 1920-talet flyttar Olson till Berlin och blir elev hos Alexander Archipenko, en rysk skulptör och målare. Där kommer han i kontakt med avantgardet på kontinenten; Der Sturm, italiensk futurism, rysk konstruktivism och fransk kubism vilket influerade hans skapande. Olson tillhörde senare Halmstadgruppen där bland annat Stellan Mörner och Esaias Thorén var medlemmar. Han finns bland annat representerad i Nationalmuseums- och Moderna Museets samlingar. Olson är främst surrealistisk i sitt uttryck och skapade gärna fantasifulla figurkompositioner och landskap.
