Fonografen kan sägas vara en tidig föregångare till vinylspelaren. Den togs fram efter en fransk förlaga av den amerikanske uppfinnaren Thomas Edison redan 1877. Den använder samma princip som vinylspelaren med spår och nål för att spela upp ljud. Men i stället för platta skivor lagras ljudet på cylindrar. Fonografen kan även användas för att spela in ljud.
