International stars make a splash

Richard H. Pettibone, "Roy Lichtenstein Hopeless 1963" (detail). Sold for 1.347.500 SEK

Established artist and international buyers at Contemporary Art & Design

This autumns Contemporary Art & Design auction offered the best within contemporary art, photography and post-war design with Warhol as the brightest shining star. Richard H. Pettibones iconic version of Roy Lichtensteins recognizable motif was the evenings first lot sold for over 1 million SEK and was sold after intense bidding for 1 347 500 SEK.

We have noticed an increased international interest for Bukowskis Contemporary with a majority of international bidders. The evenings highlight for me personally was Pettibones ”Roy Lichtenstein Hopeless 1963”. I am immensely happy that we could include this fantastic piece in the auction, says Louise Wrede, Specialist Contemporary Art.

The demand of pop art and art from contemporary classics is still strong. Bukowskis presented an exciting collection of works by Andy Warhol, where the talked about motif ”Rebel without a cause (James Dean)”, was the evenings second lot sold for over 1 million SEK. Several well established names such as Baechler, Lasker och Zaugg also had great attention and final prices.

I am so pleased one of my favorite pieces, ”Electric chair” was sold over the estimate. The bidding on Warhols motif of Mich Jagger and James Dean started well over the estimates and were sold for amazing 563 500 SEK and 1 029 000 SEK, says Karin Aringer, Specialist Photography and Contemporary Art.

Bukowskis is also pleased to announce a new auction record for Dan Wolgers iconic piece ”Här slutar allmän väg III”, which was sold for 637 138 SEK. Swedish postmodernism at its best!

Hans Hammarskiölds photograph ”Spanska Ridskolan” was sold for 48 450 SEK and was one of the top lots within the unusually large department of black and white documentary photography. Last springs dynamic selection of feministic and political art was this season followed with significant works of art from artist like Gittan Jönsson, Lena Svedberg and Maria Friberg, who all sold very well.
