Modern Art + Design - Wetterling Collection

Lars Wetterling's love for art evoke at school age when he visited a neighbour who had a home filled with art and beautiful furniture. He particularly remembers one painting that touched his heart without him being able to explain why. This experience opened a door into the world of art. In the early 1960s, he became a member of the Friends of the Art Museum, where his expertise and contacts played a significant role.**

In close collaboration with museum directors Gösta Lilja and Bo Sylvan, Lars was instrumental in several important purchases of works by important Swedish artists. Eventually, Lars became chairman of the group Konstklubben, liaising with various artists to purchase works of art for its members and the museum, thus becoming an ambassador for modern Swedish art.

During the years when his own home was filled with art, the absolute criterion was consistently to buy only works that had touched him on a personal level, that in some way recalled the feeling when he experienced the painting in the neighbour's home as a child. Lars Wetterling's collection ranges from post-war art to the present day, from abstract expressionists such as Evert Lundquist to contemporary works by Karin Mamma Andersson.

It's an extraordinary amount of trust to sell someone's collection, and it's often quite an emotional process from consignment to sale. It's also extra fun to work with collections and get to know the people behind them. A collection can look many different ways, but the common thread is the love and passion of the collector for the works, which have often been acquired over a lifetime.

Bukowskis is delighted to be selling collector Lars Wetterling's extensive and lovingly assembled collection. The collection is being sold in three parts, one of which has been sold at Contemporary Art & Design, one part is being sold here at this autumn's Modern Art + Design auction and the last part in a themed auction on our online auctions. I have chosen to highlight one of the exquisite silver and gold objects collected by Lars Wetterling, and it is Lars Håkansson's beautiful jug that will represent the collection.

Stefan Gierowski, ”Obraz LXII”

His love and passion for art are still strong. In a recent conversation with Lars, he talked about how he is now interested in black-and-white prints and three-dimensional sculptures and how those expressions differ from that of paintings. His curiosity and ability to find works that express and trigger emotions run like a common thread through his extensive collection of art, crafts and design.

Lars Wetterling's collection will be sold at Bukowskis in the autumn of 2022 during Modern Art + Design, November 17 - 18th.
