On Thursday afternoon, the artworks were hammered down at Bukowskis’ live auction Important Spring Sale, which featured works by some of Sweden’s most significant artists, including Bruno Liljefors, Carl Larsson, John Bauer, August Strindberg, and Anders Zorn.
The auction’s top lot was Anders Zorn’s painting "Hämta vatten" ("The Water Pails"), (1907), which sold for a final price of SEK 15.5 million. This made it not only the most expensive sale of the auction, but also the highest-priced Swedish artwork sold at auction in Sweden this season.
Hämta vatten belongs to Zorn’s celebrated winter scenes from his time in Gopsmor outside Mora. The painting depicts Hållams-Kesti, one of the artist’s favourite models, shown in traditional Mora costume in a snow-covered landscape. With his masterful brushwork and sense of light, colour, and movement, Zorn transforms an everyday task into a poetic and vivid moment.
The painting’s first owner was Consul Erik Brodin, a close friend of Anders Zorn. His extensive art collection included several of the artist’s finest works in private ownership, among them Kaikroddare, Väninnor, Reflexer, and Söndagsmorgon. The latter was sold at Bukowskis’ Important Winter Sale in 2021 for SEK 35.25 million, setting the record at the time as the most expensive Swedish artwork ever sold at auction.
Final price: 15 468 750 SEK
