A Collector's Home – Christmas, Christmas, glorious Christmas

This is the sixth auction in the series featuring selected items from the magnificent home in Malmö. Here lived a true enthusiast whose collection had grown so vast that it now, like a force, has begun to extend outward.

Christmas is approaching, even in our wonderful home in Malmö. We offer a delightful mix of, of course, Santa figures but also other items that can brighten up the winter darkness. The Santa figure has long been seen as a central character in Christmas celebrations. He is a combination of various traditional, mythical figures, real people, as well as stories and advertising. In different periods and places, Santa has been depicted in various ways and has had different characteristics. Even today, perceptions of Santa differ depending on which traditional beliefs dominate in a given region. However, there is a trend toward homogenization, as certain images and personality traits are reproduced globally: a friendly, round older man with a large beard, usually dressed in red.

In earlier times, within Germanic culture, Christmas was celebrated around the winter solstice. This celebration was associated with the god Odin, also called Julner. One can see Odin the Wanderer—with his long white beard, floppy hat, riding across the sky at night, and visiting people in their homes—as the archetypal precursor to today’s Santa. Now it’s your turn to brighten your celebration with one or more Santas from our collection. Welcome to browse the auction and find your favorite.
