A Selection from the Björn Springfeldt Collection

Björn Springfeldt began his career studying art history and theoretical philosophy in Lund before taking a temporary position at Moderna Museet in Stockholm in 1968, where he remained for over twenty years. From 1986 to 1989, he served as director of Malmö Konsthall before assuming the role of director at Moderna Museet in Stockholm. During this period (1989–1995), plans were made for the new museum building on Skeppsholmen, and from 1994 until his departure, the museum operated in temporary premises in Spårvagnshallarna in Vasastan. In his capacity as the museum's director, he has orchestrated exhibitions showcasing notable artists, including Per Kirkeby, Lee Jaffe, Kiki Smith, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Bill Viola. The final exhibition at the museum's previous location featured a comprehensive display of works by the renowned German painter Gerhard Richter.

In 1995, Björn was appointed cultural attaché at the Swedish Embassy in Germany, which was located in Bonn at the time, and subsequently moved to Berlin. He remained in this position for five years. "I would have been very happy to stay in Berlin. Some of the best musicians, artists and comic book creators are there. The city has a wonderful raw energy,' he says. (NVP, 9 October 2006) Björn Springfeldt is renowned for his dedication to the arts, having participated in numerous initiatives aimed at disseminating knowledge and promoting artistic endeavours in various capacities. "Art has taught him that most things benefit from being turned upside down. Prior to my involvement with the Moderna Museet, my understanding of art was limited to its physical form on a wall. I proceeded to the room where the art was located on the floor. The creature was identified as a goat, and it was observed that the animal was carrying a car tyre around its abdomen. At that moment, he was overcome with joy at the sheer magnitude of human imagination." (NVP, 9 October 2006). Bukowskis has been entrusted with the sale of parts of Björn Springfeldt's private art collection.
