Auction: October 23rd at Arsenalsgatan 2 in Stockholm

Carl Palmegren, head of specialist watches, chooses different highlights:

Lot 1. In 1969, Zenith launched the very first automatic chronograph, it was presented under the name Zenith El Primero, and the meaning of ”El Primero” can be translated to ”the very first one”. Lot number 1 in this auction is a Zenith El Primero from the very first series, with the reference A386, which only remained in production between 1969 and 1971 and was produced in less than 2,500 copies. Later on, this movement was used by Rolex when they launched its very first automatic Daytona 1988.

Lot 4 and 34. At the beginning of the 1970s, Lemania developed a watch model for the Swedish Air Force. The watches were a part of the pilot’s uniforms for Saab 37 Viggen, by then they had never been sold on the public market, hence the nickname ”Viggen”. There are probably less than 100 watches left, they are very rare on auctions and sought-after by collectors around the world. It feels fantastic to be able to present two Viggen watches in this auction.

Lot 38. Rolex Daytona is probably the world’s most well-known watch model and the record price on auction is at the moment over 17 million dollars. Lot number 38 belongs to the first Daytona watches with an automatic movement. The movement is built mainly on Zenith El Primero and a common nickname for the model from this period is ”Zenith” Daytona. What makes this auction’s Daytona extra interesting is due to the fact that it has a so-called inverted six in the movement along with a very rare mark II bezel (225-Bezel). Additionally, this watch comes with all appendages from the date of the purchase.

Lot 65. Reference 6440 is one of Vacheron Constantin's most sought-after models and its extraordinary experimental design has provided its nickname ”Ciccolatone” since it looks like a small piece of chocolate. The model was launched in 1957 and the production lasted until the beginning of the 1960s. It is driven by one of Vacheron Constantin’s very first automatic movement, caliber 1971, and less than 140 pieces were produced in this model.

Lot 87. The iconic Rolex Submariner was launched in 1954 and was, among many, worn by Sean Connery in the first couple of Bond movies. Lot number 87 comes from 1964 and features a so-called ”underline dial” which refers to the line during 200 meters = 600 feet on the movement. In the 60s, more harsh regulations for radio-activity were instated, which is the reason why Rolex added the line and mark on the new radium free movements. This feature only occurred during a short period of time in the 1960s and therefore this particular features is very sought-after among collectors.
