On Sunday, art, works of art, and jewellery went under the hammer at Bukowskis' annual online auction, the Helsinki Spring Sale. One of the major highlights was a painting by the Finnish artist Reidar Särestöniemi, which achieved a new world record.
The oil painting ‘Fjällsjö’, an oil on canvas created in 1968, was offered with a low estimate of 40,000 EUR and sold for a final price of 196,800 EUR — a new world record for a work by Reidar Särestöniemi.
“This year marks the 100th anniversary of Reidar Särestöniemi’s birth, and the centenary has cemented his position as one of Finland’s most celebrated artists. The painting ‘Fjällsjö’ is a prime example of the artist’s sense of composition and expressive, colour-saturated style.”
In total, the auction brought in over 1 million EUR, reflecting continued strong interest in both modern and classical Finnish art. High final prices were also achieved for works by, among others, Tove Jansson, Helene Schjerfbeck, Eero Järnefelt, and Akseli Gallen-Kallela.
