Purchased from Gösta Montell (1899-1975), head of the Etnographic Museum 1954-1966. Montell took part on Sven Hedins expedition in Central Asia 1929-1933. He published three books; one about the Temple Yonghegong together with Ferdinand Lessing and one about the Mongols and another 'Amidst gods and people, memories of happy years in Peking'.

Yanluo Wang is the god of death and the ruler of Diyu, overseeing the "Ten Kings of Hell" in its capital of Youdu. The name is a transcription of the Sanskrit for "King Yama".
