Barbro Nilsson
(Sweden, 1899-1983)

A carpet, "Slottet", flat weave, ca 280-282 x 295,5-309,5 cm, designed by Barbro Nilsson, unsigned.

A green melange ground with a decor of Malmöhus castle, geese, cats, trees as well as two sides with a zigzag patterned border in ivory and a variety of red nuances. (Unique).

Slightly faded. Some partly hard wear, slightly dirty, stains, repairs. The sides and ends have possibly later edges.

Provenance

This highly interesting and unique carpet was designed by Barbro Nilsson in 1928 as a wedding gift to her brother the art historian and architect Erik Lundberg and Ingegerd Koch. The carpet Slottet shows Malmöhus castle which is one of Malmö's characteristic buildings. Erik Lundberg worked among others with the restoration of Malmöhus castle around 1928-1929 and lived with his family at the castle during the restoration. The children Lisbeth and Jörgen were born in June 1929 in on of the towers at Malmöhus castle where the family lived.
