Hyacinthos var en underskön yngling i den grekiska mytologin som precis alla blev förälskade i och ville ha. Apollon var den som vann hans hjärta och de tu blev ett. Zephyros, västanvinden, blev vanvettigt svartsjuk och blåste en kraftig vind som tog tag i den diskus som de älskande lekte med. Diskusen träffade Hyacinthos i huvudet och han dog i Apollons famn. På marken blandades Hyacinthos blod med Apollons tårar och på den platsen växte den första hyacinten upp.
