Designers of Riihimäki Glassworks

Riihimäen Lasi Oy was a versatile glass manufacturer and a renowned producer of art glass. The company was among Finland’s leading glassworks in terms of technology, and by the end of the 1930s, the glass industry in Riihimäki had undergone a significant transformation: from craft-based production to large-scale industrial manufacturing. However, art and utility glass items were still made using the traditional mouth-blowing technique.

After the wars, Riihimäen Lasi began to focus on design. Nanny Still and Helena Tynell were hired as new designers, and Aimo Okkolin, Tamara Aladin, Erkkitapio Siiroinen, and many others also contributed as designers.

Mouth-blown and pressed glass vases were produced in large quantities especially during the 1960s and 1970s, with a significant portion exported. Among the most well-known pieces are the Sun Bottle designed by Helena Tynell and Aimo Okkolin’s multifaceted colored crystal art glass.
