Yrjö Kukkapuro 1933–2025

Yrjö Kukkapuro is one of the most successful Finnish modern designers of all time. A cornerstone of Kukkapuro's work is a structural approach inspired by architectural design, characterized using separate components — with the exception of a roughly ten-year "plastic period" between 1964 and 1973, whose most iconic product is the Karuselli lounge chair.

This serial, component-based thinking has dominated his production from the early 1960s Ateljee collection to the present day.
Kukkapuro's work includes distinct product families, such as the classic Ateljee, Remmi, and Moderno series, all still in production. Additionally, the Triennale Chair (1960) and the A509 Rocking Chair (1986) remain in production. The iconic Karuselli chair is part of Vitra’s portfolio.

For Kukkapuro, design has been a way to channel his interest in art and sculpture. Collaborations with architects served as a key source of inspiration for his work — as seen in the Saturnus and Experiment series.
Yrjö Kukkapuro has received the Pro Finlandia Medal, the Kaj Franck Design Prize, and the State Design Prize. His furniture is included in the collections of institutions such as the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, MoMA in New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
