More information

Heidi Blomstedt (born June 20, 1911) was the youngest daughter of composer Jean Sibelius and his wife Aino Sibelius. She graduated as a ceramicist in 1932 from the Central School of Applied Arts.
Throughout her design career, Blomstedt was guided by ideals of a more beautiful everyday life, simplicity, and rational thinking. Her childhood home, Ainola in Tuusula, also had a significant influence on her artistic expression.
After graduating, Blomstedt worked as an independent artist. In the 1960s, she expanded her work to include glass design, incorporating the same forms and aesthetics she used in ceramics. The glass pieces were blown at the Riihimäki Glass Factory and later at the Kumela Glass Factory. These objects were sold in only a few interior design shops in Finland, such as Artek.

Designer

Heidi Blomstedt (1911–1982) is known as a ceramic artist and belongs to an important artistic family as the daughter of the renowned composer Jean Sibelius and his wife Aino Sibelius. Blomstedt's artistic legacy continued through her marriage to architect Aulis Blomstedt and their two children, artist Juhana Blomstedt and architect Severi Blomstedt.

Heidi Blomstedt started her career at the Arabia factory and graduated from the ceramics department of the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1932, after which she worked mainly as a freelance ceramist, focusing on minimalist objects. Blomstedt's influence on Finnish ceramic art was particularly pronounced in the 1960s, when she designed tall square and rectangular ceramic objects for Kupittaan Savi Oy, reflecting her interest in geometry and simplified forms. The collaboration with Kupittaan Savi Oy produced a collection of vases and bowls in assorted colours, which were launched in 1962, bearing the artist's own HB stamp.
