Scandinavian Photography

Photography has experienced a significant upswing in both public and commercial interest in the Scandinavian market in recent years. Photography is now an integral part of our art history. In Sweden, the development during the first half of the 20th century was driven by photographers with a distinct documentary style. The Stockholm School of Photography, run by Christer Strömholm and Tor-Ivan Odulf from 1962 to 1974, has left a significant mark. So have the ten photographers who made up Tiofoto, a photography collective, and photo agency. During the 1990s, a new, conceptual direction developed within Scandinavian photography. In Finland, this development was driven by teachers and students at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, and in Sweden, several influential photographers were trained at the School of Photography, where Tuija Lindström was Sweden's first female professor of photography (1992–2002). In this curated auction, we present a number of different photographers whose images illustrate the wide range of expressions found within the genre of photography in the Scandinavian countries. Perhaps there is a common thread after all, the melancholic and somewhat mysterious mood that the images convey.
