Vladimir Igorevich Yakolev (1934–1998) is one of the representatives of "underground" art. He was a grandson of the landscape painter Michael Yakovlev’s (1880-1941). Yakovlev attended Vasily Sitnikov's workshop. In the late fifties he joined a group of Moscow nonconformists. He mainly painted in gouache on paper or hardboard, preferring constrained, cool tones. His portraits, still-lives, and well-known "flowers" provoke a sense of deep lonely existence in the picturesque space, the concealed energy of resistance. (Leonid Shishkin Gallery)
