Eric Grate är av många ansedd som vår främste skulptör under 1900-talet. Grate tillhörde det fåtal svenska konstnärer som umgicks i det verkliga avantgardet i Paris under slutet av 20-talet och framåt. Den aktuella skulpturen är mycket ovanlig, utförd i Paris kring mitten av 1920-talet i marmor istället för brons som Grate senare kom att helt ägna sig åt. Man kan ana inflytande av ett flertal skulptörer verksamma i Paris under den aktuella perioden, såsom Alexander Archipenko och tidiga Henri Laurens.
