Christian Fredrik Swensson, French line ship for steam engine
Signed C F Svenson and dated -90. Canvas 69x 84 cm.
Christian Fredrik Svensson (1834 - 1909) was a Swedish marine painter and a second lieutenant in the naval reserve. In his youth, he was a ship's boy who trained to become, and worked as, a steamship captain. In 1899, he retired from the navy to devote himself full-time to painting. Svensson studied for the Swedish painter Jacob Hägg in Stockholm and the Danish marine painter Carl Frederik Sørensen in Copenhagen, and received some guidance in etching techniques from Theodor Gellerstedt.
