A book, French edition of Schefferus’ early and important work on the Laplanders

French edition of Schefferus’ early and important work on the
Laplanders, their history and culture, the first authoritative account
of the lapps since Olaus Magnus. The first edition appeared in 1673 (in
Latin), a German in 1675, an enlarged French edition in 1678 and a Dutch
in 1682. (Sten G. Lindberg, Swedish Books 1280-1967, p. 23).
With engraved title, folding engraved map and 21 engraved plates.
Engravings in text. Old full calf, very worn, front joint cracked, lower
part of spine missing (piece of leather loosely supplied), ink
scribbling to endleaves. Some 15 leaves at beginning, including title
and map, with very worn lower margin (without loss), map mostly
unaffected save for two short tears and a few mms of engraved frame;
another few leaves with traces of damp to lower margin. Tear across pp.
193/4, but almost entirely in between lines of text. Some insignificant
worming to top margin towards end. Most of the book internally fine with
wide margins, including plates.
