From the Ottoman Empire

Within the great power of the Ottoman Empire, craftsmanship developed over centuries to a level of excellence. In this private collection, one can see examples of this in everything from prayer beads and ceramics to weapons and souvenirs. Each item bears, in its own way, the mark of what was contained within the Ottoman Empire—both from its time and through the legacy it left behind. The Ottoman Empire was an absolute monarchy, but in many respects, it was also tolerant and multicultural.

The Ottoman Empire lasted for over 600 years. It was founded in the late 13th century in Anatolia, present-day Turkey. Its greatest extent was reached in the 17th century, when it stretched across parts of three continents. From just south of Vienna in the north to Yemen in the south, and from Baku on the Caspian Sea in the east to the border with Morocco in the west. The empire was dissolved at the end of World War I. The Ottoman Empire was forced to relinquish vast territories as it, along with Germany, was on the losing side. The Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923.
