Nils and Alice Wedel – an Artist's Life

Bukowskis is honoured to present a themed auction featuring works from the collection of artist couple Nils and Alice Wedel – offering a unique insight into two lives interwoven by art, friendship, and international influences. The auction includes their own works as well as pieces by artists such as Asger Jorn, Ivan Jordell, Bror Hjorth, and Wiwen Nilsson.

Alice and Nils met as young students at the School of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg. Together they travelled to Paris, where Nils encountered Cubism and was inspired by Fernand Léger – an artistic turning point he himself described as life-changing. During their years in France, Denmark and the region of Skåne, the couple created a home filled with artists, writers and performers – a lifestyle that deeply shaped their artistic practice.

Nils, together with Alice, developed the technique known as navax – a form of painting using wax and tempera – and he is today best known for his vibrant, abstract compositions. Alice made a name for herself primarily as a textile artist, awarded a gold medal at the 1925 Paris Exposition. During the war, they opened their home to Danish artists fleeing the occupation and continued exhibiting together long after the war had ended.

This auction offers a journey through a creative and open home where art was ever-present – in colour, form, and life.
