Einar Jolin – Elegance in Every Line

Einar Jolin occupies a distinctive position within Swedish modernism and, over the course of his long artistic career, developed an expressive style characterised by elegance and precise, assured brushwork. After studying at the Konstnärsförbundets School in Stockholm, he early on found his own visual language in which the modern impulses of his time were combined with an almost timeless stillness. Travels to Paris and encounters with the continental avant-garde provided inspiration, yet Jolin always remained faithful to his own poetic vision of the world – often focused on the city’s skylines, harbours, parks, and interiors.

His painting is marked by an exquisite balance between precision and lightness. With an effortless handling of the brush, Jolin constructed compositions in which lines and areas of colour interact with great finesse. The cool palette, often rendered in subdued blues, greys, and greens, creates a calm and refined expression that has become one of the artist’s most recognisable hallmarks. It includes motifs such as the artist’s beloved Stockholm and vibrant still lifes, as well as pencil sketches from his early years, with provenance from the artist’s family.
