Alvar & Aino Aalto

Alvar and Aino Aalto were key figures in Finnish architecture and design, as well as pioneers of modernism. In their collaboration, they combined functionality, aesthetics, and timeless design in a way that made them internationally recognized trailblazers of modern architecture and design.

Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) gained worldwide acclaim as an architect and designer. His work includes a wide range of cultural buildings, residential areas, and urban centers both in Finland and abroad, such as Finlandia Hall, Villa Mairea, and La Maison Carré in Spain. He also designed furniture and objects, the most famous being the Savoy Vase and Stool 60. Aino Aalto (1894–1949) graduated as an architect in 1921 and joined Alvar Aalto’s architectural office a few years later. She played a central role in furniture design and business operations, serving as managing director of the furniture and interior design company Artek in the 1940s. The Aaltos’ architectural projects embodied the idea of ‘a total work of art’, where buildings, furniture, and lighting formed a unified whole. Their guiding principle was to create functional, beautiful, and high-quality solutions for everyday life. Founded in 1935, Artek promoted this vision by offering Aalto’s furniture and advancing the ideals of modern living.
