Hertha Hillfon debuterade som keramiker 1958. Under 1960-talet kombinerade hon materialet lera med motiv från vardagen: köksredskap, kläder och mat - hennes runda brödkaka är en klassiker. Under 1970-talet fick hon flera beställningsarbete, bl a en stor väggrelief i 22 delar till Operaterassen i Stockholm, En av delarna var den fylliga munnen, som kom att bli hennes signum.
Munnen gjordes inte bara i lera utan också i glas, plast och aluminium. En plastvariant gjordes som multipel till Konstfrämjandets utställning Multi Maxi Mini 1970.
