More information

The jewel in IKEA's plastic collection during the early 1970s was the lounge chair "Drake". The creator Thomas Fränninge was titled as Engineer in the catalogs after contributing knowledge on how plastic could be cast. Fränninge manufactured the seat shells for Drake himself and supplied them to IKEA. Fränninge's own words about plastic as a material:

  • Plastic manufacturing is still perceived by many as a somewhat secret, experimental activity among bubbling test tubes - furniture with peculiar shapes, made for future space stations. It is high time to rethink! Plastic is a wonderful everyday material today, and plastic furniture is coming on a broad front.
