Totaro Sakuma, a stoneware hexagonal vase, Mashiko, Japan, 20th century.

Hexagonal with tapered neck and flared mouth. Decorated with combed 'kushime' pattern and light glaze to olive ground. Height 24.5 cm.

Minor crazings to glaze. FIring crack to the base.

Designer

Sakuma was born into a traditional pottery family but was influenced by Hamada Shoji (1894-1977) and learned to master various techniques and glazes early in his career. His work has been described as jimi (quiet and reserved) but is appreciated worldwide as part of the mingei (民芸) tradition.
