Margherita Kronberg, daughter of the artist Julius Kronberg, was born in 1888 and belonged to the generation of women who, despite the conventions of the time, purposefully sought their place in the landscape of modern art. The painting currently at auction is an early work, executed three years after she graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and portrays the artist's younger brother Staffan as a young Renaissance prince. In the work, we see her early style with clear roots in the realism of the turn of the century. Both Carl Larsson's boy portraits and John Bauer's princes are reminiscent in Staffan's figure. Kronberg's expression would later evolve towards a more modernist and expressionist direction.
