Swedish Modernists

Modernism made its breakthrough in Sweden in the early 20th century, when Swedish students of the French artist Henri Matisse presented their works in Stockholm. This marked the beginning of a new era in Swedish art. A period defined by courage, vibrant colour, and bold experimentation with form. The Swedish modernists broke with tradition, allowing colours to glow in brilliant, expressive hues. Through a spirited colour expressionism, they captured the rhythm and energy of modern life.

This auction brings together several of the artists who helped shape and renew Swedish modernism, creators whose strength, individuality, and experimental drive are united in timeless works. Among those represented are Isaac Grünewald, Gösta Sandels, Bror Hjorth, Evert Lundqvist, Karin Parrow, and Pelle Åberg.
