More information

Georg Heinrich Görtz, Karl XII's chief treasurer, controlled large parts of Sweden's financial policy and was the one who proposed withdrawing copper and silver coins and instead replacing them with emergency money. The emergency coins were minted with 10 different motifs, the classical Roman gods. With the help of the emergency coins, Sweden's finances came into better balance, but unfortunately, Karl XII allowed many more emergency coins to be minted than Görtz had suggested, which led to inflation and great discontent among the people. Karl XII had promised that all emergency coins would be exchanged after the war, but that never happened.
