AN early 18TH CENTURY PROBABLY ENGLISH Japanned laquer cabinet on stand.

Rectangular cabinet with nine drawers behind a pair of doors. Hinges, corner mounts and lock plates in gilt brass. Decorated with river landscapes, insects, birds and animals in pairs. Length 98 cm, width 51 cm, height 89 cm. Stand length 110 cm, width 57 cm, height 64 cm.

Uneven crazing. Harder wear to the decor on the doors and sides. Colour losses. Drawers with later mounts. Later European style stand. Cracks due to dryness of the material. One corner mount missing.

The fashion for oriental laquer during the baroque period led to a production of japanned furniture in Northen Europe, not only in England. For instance in Berlin Gérard Dagly (c. 1660–1715) founded a high quality production.
