The specialist's choice: Helsinki Today - Contemporary Art

Bukowskis' specialists share their favourites from Helsinki Today - Contemporary Art. This auction presents the very best of Nordic contemporary art and design and the selection this season includes works by some of the most sought-after artists at the moment.

Which are your favorite works from Helsinki Today - Contemporary Art?

Jani Leinonen, ”For I was hungry”. The text in the artwork is from the Gospel of Matthew. The emotionally charged words together with the commercial images creates the strong and interesting tension typical in Leinonen's work, says Laura Pohjola, specialist in art.

Jean Paul Gaultier, Roche Bobois, ”Ben Hur”. This chair is truly unique. It successfully combines modern design with Gaultier’s daring style, says Anna Rosenius, specialist in design.

Janna Syvänoja’s jewellery. There are many internationally successful Finnish jewellery designers and it is an honour to present some of their works here at Bukowskis. Janna Syvänoja’s works are like fantastic sculptures that, despite their impressive format, are extremely easy to wear. The design and execution are both carefully planned, says Nina Westerlund, specialist in jewellery.

Tommi Toija, sculptures. I'm fascinated by the sculptures by Tommi Toija, but some people find themselves feeling protective or even annoyed with them. These boys, placed in mundane and sometimes even silly situations, make me see the world through their eyes in a way. I'm also a big fan of three-dimensional artworks and I hope that buyers would remember them when thinking about their purchases. Sculptures are especially well suited for viewing from new angles, in new light, every time you encounter them, says Johanna Lindfors, specialist in art.

What makes contemporary art so interesting?

Art is always interesting, especially contemporary art as it reflects our time, our surroundings and values. From a commercial perspective, contemporary art on the secondary market is particularly interesting, with its added sense of openness and potential, since the artworks are usually created by artists that are still active in the field, says Laura Pohjola, specialist art.

At its best contemporary art breaks boundaries and stirs debate. In the art world it is useful to sometimes stop and ask yourself "what" and "why". Contemporary art literally takes you into the present - it mirrors the world we live in and can stir new insights about the world, society and ourselves. "Contemporary art should not be feared, or underestimated", says Johanna Lindfors, specialist in art.
