The specialist's choice – Camilla Behrer shares her favourites from the upcoming sale

Specialist's choice Camilla Behrer

We have spoken to Camilla Behrer, Specialist Design and 20th Century Works of Art, about this spring's upcoming auction Modern Art + Design. She took the opportunity to highlight some of her personal favourites in the sale.

What can we look forward to in this spring's Modern Art + Design auction?
– At the design department, we are proud to be able to present one of the largest modern auctions ever, with a vibrant and varied selection of glass, ceramics, furniture and design.
I am especially delighted that Bukowskis has been entrusted with selling several essential objects from Alva and Gunnar Myrdal's private home, including an extraordinary bureau by Axel Einar Hjorth, exhibited at the World Fair in Barcelona in 1929. The collection includes many interesting objects from 1920 to the 1940s – a period that we often describe as the golden age of the 20th-century art industry in Sweden. This was a period with changing style ideals from Swedish Grace to Swedish Modern.

Feel free to look through our web catalogue and do not hesitate to stop by for a viewing. You can also email or call me, and we will find a time that suits you. Welcome!

When is the exhibition and auction?
Viewing May 12th – 16th, Berzelii Park 1, Stockholm.
Auction Live May 17th – 18th, Arsenalsgatan 2, Stockholm.

Josef Frank cabinet, "Plan de Paris à vol d'oiseau", Firma Svenskt Tenn, probably around 1937-43.

The auction's extremely rare cabinet "Plan de Paris à vol d'oiseau" by Josef Frank for Firma Svenskt Tenn, is one of only three known cabinets of the same model, wallpapered with Georges Peltier's Paris map. This cabinet has slightly larger proportions than the similar cabinet that was sold at a high score price at Bukowskis in November 2021. It is gratifying to see both the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe on the front of the cabinet on this slightly wider model. The posters are also in excellent condition.

Ferdinand Boberg vase, Marqueterie sur verre, Reijmyre, Art Nouveau ca 1901-1905

A unique collector's item of the highest dignity! The vase was made around 1901-1905 in rolled glass with cut-outs, inspired by Emile Gallé's glass in so-called "marqueterie sur verre". Reijmyre commissioned about ten objects for the international arts and crafts exhibition "Prima Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte Decorativa Moderna" in Turin in 1902.
Fredrik Kessmeier, the skilled glassblower from the German glassblower family, was hired for the exhibition. Together with Carl Reimers, he was commissioned to produce the advanced glass artwork displayed in Reijmyre's stand, all with marine motifs designed by Ferdinand and Anna Boberg and Betzy Ählström.

Axel Einar Hjorth an ebony and walnut tabouret, Nordiska Kompaniet, 1928 for the World's Fair in Barcelona 1929

#####
This is a lovely tabouret by Axel Einar Hjorth, one of a pair made in 1928 for Nordiska Kompaniet's stand at the World's Fair in Barcelona in 1929. The Barcelona exhibition was the first major assignment for Axel Einar Hjorth as chief architect at Nordiska Kompaniet. Hjorth was the architect responsible for the 300 square meter exhibition space, decorated with exclusive magnificent furniture from Hjort's Louis and Caesar series. #####This tabouret becomes an exquisite solitaire in any interior in its austere Swedish Grace elegance.

Hugo Elmqvist vase, Stockholm, jugend, ca 1900, brons

#####
This is probably the largest and most impressive vase I have seen, made in Hugo Elmqvist's workshop in Stockholm around 1900. Elmqvist patented his casting method, and he made his vases and sculptures in cast and patinated bronze . There are several beautiful Art Nouveau objects at this auction, with relief decorations of plants and insects.

Sven Wejsfelt a stoneware floor vase, Gustavsberg studio, Sweden 1963.

#####
This is one of my favourites from the ceramics department. An impressive vase, designed and skilfully executed by Sven Wejsfelt for Gustavsberg's studio, signed and dated in 1963. The ceramicist and master turner Sven Wejsfelt worked from 1953 to 1970 as a turner for Stig Lindberg. Much of this unique splendour vase bears a solid resemblance to the objects Sven made for Stig Lindberg in the early 1960s, but instead of the more common pressed decor, Sven has modelled buds in relief.
