The specialist's choice – Jonatan Jahn lists design favourites

Specialists choice Jonatan Jahn

We have spoken with Jonatan Jahn, Head Specialist Contemporary and Modern Design, who talks about the selection at this spring's Contemporary Art & Design. He also takes the opportunity to list some of his favourite objects among the substantial amount of international contemporary art, prints and photography at this spring's auction.

What can we look forward to in this season's Contemporary Art & Design auction?

– This spring’s Contemporary Art & Design offers both classics and news. I have chosen to focus on artists and designers who are quite new to the auction market. These actors are influential and are shaping our present, they creates tomorrow's classics. To follow a designer's career and see how ideas and objects take shape and evolve is a very inspiring journey. At this auction there is an opportunity to enhance your home with something that reflects our time.

Fredrik Paulsen "Bamba" chair

Fredrik Paulsen is one of the most central designers of our time. Paulsen's “Bamba” chair, is not only a unique object from one of Sweden's foremost designers, but also a piece of design history with its unique provenance. Fredrik Paulsen, Simon Klenell and Kristoffer Sundin, founded the Örnsberg auction, which had a significant impact on the design movement in the early 2010s. During those years, a shift occurred where more actors dared to start working more independently and studio-based. The Örnsberg auction contributed significantly to highlighting the new generation of designers and giving these actors a showcase and a place to sell their objects. The “Bamba” chair was sold at the now-legendary auction and is depicted in the 2014 catalog. Fredrik Paulsen had his major public breakthrough with the solo exhibition "Unmaking Democratic Design" at the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg in 2019.

Niklas Runesson Wall Mirror

Niklas Runesson is a boundary-breaking artist and, in my opinion, one of the best in the in the Craft/Design scene. Runesson has full control over the entire process from design to execution. His furniture is like living sculptures with their organic forms. The objects created in Runesson's studio are all unique and characterized by his personal expression that has no equivalent in Sweden.

Runesson is a self-taught artisan who grew up in Småland. With a heritage of three generations of woodworkers, Runesson takes the legacy into the present. Runesson creates his objects freely without sketching or drawing models. He usually has working measurements for furniture in his head, and the rest he does on pure intuition. Much of Runesson's inspiration comes from nature but also from fragments of the unknown. A mantra that often comes back when he wants to explain the feeling is "friendly creature," which is also a recurring theme.

The mirror is one of a series of variants that were executed during 2021-22 and was shown, among other places, at Arranging Things during Stockholm Design Week 2022. Runesson is also involved in the Cream project and has recently launched an armchair for Dusty Deco.

LAST Installation

LAST is the design world's supergroup consisting of Åsa Jungnelius, Gustaf Nordenskiöld, and Fredrik Paulsen. LAST was founded to question the manufacturing process of everyday objects. The project was driven by the idea of a small-scale manufacturing process and the value of craftsmanship. The objects in the auction are functional items composed as a sculpture or an installation and were created as a unique work in 2014. For almost 10 years, the group has been significant in Sweden's design and craft scene. All three actors are central to the genre-crossing movement where the boundaries between art and design have been blurred. Therefore, this is a significant work for our contemporary design movement.

Gustaf Westman "Popcorn" mirror

Gustaf Westman is one of the most talked-about designers in recent years. He has made a successful career mainly thanks to social media. Westman belongs to the new generation of designers who have built their careers through new channels without major producers backing them. Westman trained as an architect but found his calling in furniture design. His colourful and playful furniture and mirrors quickly gained attention, and he gained a large international following. The mirror in this auction is a specially commissioned item that is not part of Westman's standard range. The mirror is also from Westman's first year as an independent designer and therefore has all the potential to become a collector's object!

Love Hultén Arcade Game, "Pixelkabinett 42"

Love Hultén creates a type of object that makes him truly unique! Hultén had originally intended to work as an artist and illustrator, but after being accepted into the HDK-Valand master's program in design, he was inspired to explore a completely different genre. At HDK, he had the opportunity to work in other art forms, and Hultén became interested in technology and fine woodworking. It was at HDK that he came up with the idea that gave birth to the now highly acclaimed arcade games and handcrafted cabinets. Today, these unique game consoles are contemporary classics and have been purchased by personalities such as Kanye West. This particular example is a real collector's item as it belongs to the very first arcade games and is a prototype for the model that was later produced in an edition of 50 copies. The client wanted the game to be associated with space, so the console follows the same theme.
