The specialist's choice – Karin Aringer lists art favourites

Specialists choice Karin Aringer

We have spoken with Karin Aringer, Specialist Photographs and Contemporary Art, who talks about the selection at this spring's Contemporary Art & Design. She also takes the opportunity to list some of her favorite objects among the substantial amount of photographs at this season's auction.

Why should you buy photographs at this spring’s Contemporary Art & Design?

– I think photography as a genre is incredibly exciting. It's a technique that has had a very rapid development. In about 200 years, it has gone from glass negatives and large cameras with very long shutter speeds to digital collages and the ability to take pictures almost anytime and anywhere, even inside the human body. At the auction, we have a very varied selection of photographs. There is something for all customers, ranging from French classics like Edouard Boubat's black and white picture from 1950 to contemporary Swedish conceptual photography by Maria Friberg and Ann Eringstam. If you like cool images in larger formats, I think you should take a closer look at the monumental colour photograph of Dutch artist Ruud van Empel and Blaise Reuterswärd's large image of an atmospheric horizon. I also believe that Terry O'Neill's iconic portraits of Brigitte Bardot can appeal to many.

Elisabeth Frieberg "Untitled (blue, gold, center, beam)"

The Swedish artist Elisabeth Frieberg has a colour palette and an expression that I find very appealing. I like how she combines the raw linen canvas with carefully drawn and painted colour fields, and the contrast between the rawness of the canvas and the details in shimmering gold creates a good dynamic in the paintings. An essential part of Frieberg's working process is to be in nature and to paint from places around the world that are meaningful to her. I think that the care, time, and patience that the artist puts into her paintings are reflected in the works, they feel calming and embracing.

Maria Friberg ”Days of Eyes 1”

Maria Friberg is one of our most important contemporary Swedish artists, having worked conceptually with photography and video since the 1990s. We have several works by her in this spring's auction, including "Days of Eyes 1" and "Still Lives #6". In her staged photographs, she strives for a striking combination of aesthetically pleasing images and the typical time markers of consumerism. She often uses subtle references to earlier works in art history; for example, in "Days of Eyes 1", I see interesting parallels with Henri Rousseau's jungle paintings.
