Rolf Hanson blev känd för den breda publiken efter en uppmärksammad solo-presentation på Moderna Museet 1985-86. Utställningen visade storslagna oljemålningar med imaginära och melankoliska bilder och fick lysande kritik.
"Målare med stor bokstav. Född 1953 tillhör Rolf Hanson sin generations mest uppmärksammade målare. Under 1980-talet hade han separatutställning på Moderna museet och var Sveriges representant på biennalen i Venedig.
Hansons måleri har sammankopplats med den nordiska landskapstraditionen och Gustave Moreaus ädelstensskimrande, symbolistiska måleri.
Lars Nittve anser att Hanson ständigt söker större och större komplikationsgrad, han utmanar sig själv. Ett sätt att strö grus i maskineriet är att blanda in figurativa element, ett annat att angripa koloriten.
Det speciella med Rolf Hanson är också, enligt Lars Nittve, att han behärskar monumentala format som ingen annan svensk."
