More information

Sigrid Sandström primarily works with painting, and in her artistic practice, she continuously explores the concept of place as both a physical concept and an emotional experience. Over time, her often depicted large-scale, barren, and uninhabited landscapes have become more abstract. In her work, she questions and challenges the boundaries of painting while investigating its inherent possibilities. Although a painting fundamentally consists of colour applied to a surface, Sandström demonstrates that the richness of variation within these parameters is nearly infinite.

Throughout her artistic career, she has remained committed to painting as her primary medium, yet she approaches its traditions experimentally. She wants us to regard her works not merely as images but as physical objects to be experienced with the whole body. Her craftsmanship is experimental, employing techniques such as masking, printing, and pouring, and the time during which a work unfolds seems almost encapsulated in the many layers.

As one of the most established artists of her generation, Sandström has exhibited both in Sweden and internationally, with recent exhibitions including Perrotin Tokyo (until 22 March 2025), Perrotin Shanghai, Vandalorum, Värnamo, Waldemarsudde, Stockholm, Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm, Reykjavik Art Museum, Anat Ebgi Gallery, Los Angeles, Inman Gallery, Houston, and Västerås Art Museum. Sandström's works are included in the collections of Moderna Museet, Statens Konstråd, Malmö Art Museum, Borås Art Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, to name a few.

In addition to her artistic work, she is a dedicated professor of fine arts with a focus on painting, previously at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm and now at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. She has a solid educational background, having graduated from Yale University School of Art in 2001.
