Sea Captain Adolf Wilhelm Godtknecht († before 1890), the artist´s brother; his wife Selma Godtknecht, née Söderberg (Härnösand, Sweden 1830-1919 Stockholm); their daughter Alma Helena Albertina Godknecht (born 1854), Stora Frösunda, Solna married to Johan Albert Amundsen (born 1840); their son Karl Albert Byron Amundsen (1873-1938); thence by descent until 2018.

Three other selportraits by Godtknecht are known, two in Museum für Kunst und Künstgeschichte, Lübeck from 1842 and 1879, and one from c. 1850 (Private Collection). According to a label on the reverse, the present picture depicts the artist 19 years old and would accordingly date from around 1847.
Godtknecht stayed with his brother in Stockholm between 1880-82.
