A great success for design at Modern Art + Design

Märta Måås-Fjetterström, Axel-Einar Hjorth and Wilhelm Kåge are just some of the designers whose objects are highly sought after both in the Swedish and at the international market. Modern Art + Design's first day offered intense bidding, with Swedish designer and artist Gustaf Fjaestad's poetic ”stabbe” furniture achieving the evening's highest final price. The furniture group was sold for the fantastic final price of 2,327,500 SEK.

Sports house furniture by Axel-Einar Hjorth continues to be incredibly popular, with all numbers in the auction offering intensive bidding with high final prices. The “Sandhamn” table with a table top made of red limestone was sold for the record price of 612,500 SEK.

“It's exciting to see that Nordic quality sells at such high prices internationally,” says Björn Extergren, Head of Consignment & Fine Art Sales Department.

The demand for glass, ceramics and stoneware was extremely high and several items ended well above the estimate price. The two “ariel” vases by Edvin Öhrström were sold for 318,000 SEK and 331,000 SEK respectively, while Gunnel Nyman's glass vase, ”The Market in Kalatorilla”, was sold for 153,000 SEK – more than four times its estimate price.

Wilhelm Kåge’s fantastic stoneware sculpture ’Dragon fish’ finalized at an incredible price of 586 500 SEK. The fact that the sculpture trend is still strong is shown in the interest and bidding for the spectacular sculpture, Loop 319, by Eva Hild which reached a final price of 586 500 SEK.

The auction's result is a confirmation that our efforts to reach out internationally have succeeded, with great success, says Eva Seeman, Head Specialist Design and 20th-21st C Works of Art.

In the department for carpets and textiles, the very rare carpet “Gröna Rabatten” and the large knotted pile rug “Gröningen” ended at 280 500 SEK along with 395 000 SEK.

“It is extremely thrilling to see that carpets from Märta-Måås-Fjetterström reaches such incredible high prices now that it is the anniversary year for Märta-Måås-Fjetterström’s atelier” says Anette Granlund, head specialist carpets, textiles and Islamic works of art.

“The fact that the objects with provenance Estrid Ericson finalized high above estimates is a sign that the hype around Estrid and Firma Svenskt Tenn continues. Extra fun is that the pewter table by Tyra Lundgren ended at a fantastic final price of 588 000 SEK”, says Camilla Behrer, specialist modern works of art and design.
