Modern Art + Design – yet another successful auction for Bukowskis

Several lots exceeding 1 million SEK and a new world record for Sigrid Hjertén

The shining star at Bukowski's Modern Art + Design auction was most definitely Sigrid Hjertén, one of our times most sought-after modernists. The painting "Iván in the armchair” was sold after a long and intense bidding for a final price of 10,8 million SEK, a new world record for the artist.

– It feels incredible that we can present a new world record for Sigrid Hjertén and Bukowskis. We have an amazing team with specialists whom all did a fantastic job prior to this auction and we are very excited over this night’s successful sale, says Björn Extergren, Head of consignment & sales.

The interest is still strong for GAN and his futurist cubistic painting ”Marin” executed in Paris in the beginning of the 1920s was one of the most sought-after art works in this auction side by side with several successful sales from the Gothenburg colourists such as Inge Schiöler and Ivan Ivarsson.

Bukowskis curated Swedish Grace department went off to started off great start and offered this auction’s first lot exceeding 1 million SEK, which was Simon Gate’s bowl called ”Bacchuståget”, which achieved an incredible final price of 1 102 500 SEK.

– It is fantastic to see that the interest in Swedish Grace is huge both in Sweden and internationally. The 1920s was a golden era in the Swedish design history and the term Swedish Grace got its proper breakthrough at the Paris Exhibition in 1925, where Simon Gate’s bowl” Bacchus” was exhibited. My personal favourite is the veneered Otto Schulz cabinets which achieved a final price of 477 750 SEK, says Eva Seeman, Specialist Design and 20th Century Works of Art Department.

The star of the design department this evening was Børge Mogensen’s ”Model nr 160” easy chair and ottoman, which achieved the incredible final price of 833 000 SEK. The magnificent selection of ceramics and glass offered several of the auction’s highlights next to Josef Frank’s internationally noted ”Flora” cabinet, which after an intensive bidding was sold for a final price of 588 000 SEK. A monumental faience sculpture of an orange ended at a final price of 484 500 SEK and Kaipiainen’s ceramic sculpture of a horse rider achieved an exceptional final price of 165 750 SEK.

The carpet department included a dynamic collection from our leading textile artists such as Märta Måås-Fjetterström, Barbro Nilsson and Agda Österberg. The rare and colourful carpet ”Ostia Orange” achieved a final price of 133 875 SEK and the carpet ”Salerno blå” ended at a final price of 177 625 SEK, both highlights from Barbro Nilsson’s production.
