Strong market for high-quality art and design

Bukowskis proved great strength after this season's anticipated auction, Modern Art + Design, that just took place at Berzelii Park 1 in Stockholm. The bidders showed strong interest in the rich selection of art by the Swedish modernists, as well as design objects from the internationally acclaimed Axel Einar Hjorth alongside a very extensive private glass collection, sold high over estimate with bidders from all over the world.

We are very pleased with the remarkable result. We are now looking forward to the Contemporary Art & Design and Important Timepieces Sale tomorrow, says Björn Extergren, Head of Consignment & Sales Department, Fine Art.

Additional highlights hammered over estimate were, amongst others, Nils Dardel's "Ekipaget", Waldemar Lorentzon "Gatumusikanterna", and Leander Engström's "Norwegian coast".

After the evening's auction the market once again showed strength for Swedish and international modern art, says Andreas Rydén, Head specialist, Art, deputy managing director.

The iconic armchair "Chieftain"/"Chief Chair" by Finn Juhl sold for 637 000 SEK and became the department's most expensive furniture sold. Internationally sought-after furniture by Axel Einar Hjorth took off as ever before as well as classics by Hans J Wegner, Bruno Mathsson and Josef Frank of course.

It is extremely gratifying that interest in Swedish form seems to have spread throughout the world. Who had thought twenty years ago that the interest in Swedish pine furniture would overwhelm Danish design furniture? Some of the lots had dozens of phones and online bidders. Among the works of art, the bird sculpture by Kaipiainen flew to a final price of SEK 857,500 and the entire Swedish glass collection found new owners, says Eva Seeman, Head specialist design and 20th-21st Century works of Art.

Märta Måås-Fjetterström and Barbro Nilson were the shining stars of the carpet and textiles department with many lots sold high above estimate with intensive bidding.

Red carpets at the top of the auction as well as colourful rugs such as "Snäckorna" by Barbro Nilsson. Especially fun to see that both Märta Måås-Fjetterström and Barbro Nilsson's compositions were so sought after, partly due to Bukowski's international network and partly to the big exhibition at the Swedish castle this spring (which is now extended until the end of October), says Anette Granlund, Head Specialist Carpets, Textiles and Islamic Works of Art.

Bukowskis can now proudly present 19 lots sold over 1 million SEK for spring 2020 and look forward to the season's closing auctions Contemporary Art & Design as well as Important Timepieces which will take place June 17th.
