Beautiful criblé initials throughout. (Castigationes et varietates Virgilianae:) ”206” (recte 200) + [24] pp. With Estienne’s near full-page woodcut printer’s device to title.

Full 19th century calf, spine (faded) with 6 raised bands, circular engraved armorial bookplate: ”Arma Johannis Baronis Carteret de Hawnes Ao Xi 1841” (John Thynne, 3rd Baron Carteret, 1772-1849. He assumed the Baronetcy on February 22, 1838, after the death of his elder brother George, and died at Hawnes Place in March 1849.) Insignificant rubbing, foxing to endleaves, faint marginal waterstains toward end, slight browning of final leaves.

With an early occurence of Estienne’s magnificient, large olive-tree device and Geoffroy Tory's criblé initials, both used first for Estienne’s Bible of 1527/8. "Printed in a very magnificent manner" (Dibdin). Vergil’s Opera contains Bucolica, Georgica, and the Aeneid.
